The Tense System in English
The two simple tenses are the Present and the Past.
They are called simple because, in positive statements at least, the verb form is made up of only one word. Each simple tenses groups other tenses around it.
The Present Group
The compound tenses in this group are formed by auxiliaries in the present together with an infinite form of the main verb (infinitive or participle).
Future (will + Infinitive)
Present Tense
Present Perfect (has/have + Past Participle)
The Past Group
The compound tenses in this group are formed by auxiliaries in the past together with an infinite form of the main verb (infinitive or participle).
Conditional (would + Infinitive)
Past Tense
Past Perfect (had + Past Participle)
