KEY TO THE EXERCISE        BACK TO THE   BACK TO THE OVERVIEW AND EXERCISE         ?TO THE OVERVIEW WITH EXAMPLES

 

Read the following sentences and decide what they stand for in the above overview.
Mark them with S for Simple Form and P for Progressive Form and add the right number.
Occasionally there are sentences with both the simple and the progressive form
so that two answers must be given.

 

Example:
Water freezes at 0º Celsius. → S1 (GENERAL STATEMENTS) 

 

1.            Susan goes to evening classes twice a week.  S2

3.            Brigid is always mislaying her keys. P2

4.            It was almost midnight and raining heavily when a belated motorist called at the hotel and caught the receptionist’s attention. (…) P5, S5

6.            Kevin bought a second-hand Chevrolet last week.  S3

7.            The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. S1

8.            Fritz often goes to town on Thursday and Friday evenings. S2

9.            I have known Sheila since she went to kindergarten. S6

10.        Edward is going to Ireland next summer. P7

11.        The Annual General Meeting of the ASC takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2005. S7

12.        My elder sister lives in America. S1

13.        Alistair McGregor has been reading the SCOTSMAN ever since he went to secondary school. P6, S3

14.        Linda shut all the windows and lowered the rolling shutters on the ground floor, made sure that the front door was locked and that all the taps were turned off, picked up her suitcase and her handbag and left the house through the back door. She locked the door carefully and put the key into her handbag. Then she walked round the house and out through the garden gate. S5
